Stress Facts

Positive stress is the spice of life. Too little and we get bored. But too much can overwhelm us. Our response to life's challenges is unique to each of us. A tough situation can be distressing to one person and motivating to another.

To understand stress, we need to look at situations that occur, our thoughts about them, and the way we respond. Stressors are situations that cause stress. Major life events and even daily hassles can act as stressors.

Major Life Event Stressors include:

  • moving


  • leaving school


  • getting married


  • having a baby
  • changing jobs


  • divorce


  • illness


  • experiencing losses

Daily stressors can include:

  • being stuck in traffic

  • conflicts at work

  • conflicts with family members
  • deadlines and multiple work demands

  • the demands of family and work

  • the fast pace of modern life
