“Cuts for Charity” is an annual event, created by Jonathan De Vela. The event started four years ago when Jonathan decided he wanted to give back to the community for his 24th birthday. With seven years’ experience cutting hair, and three years’ experience as a barber, Jonathan decided to take one afternoon to cut peoples’ hair, and donate the proceeds to charity.

Jonathan has found that developing a trusting relationship between himself and his clients gives individuals a safe space to talk, which ultimately benefits their mental health. “We’re someone’s confidant, therapist, weather channel, relationship adviser, fashion guide and more,” explains Jonathan. “To me, being a barber is more than just cutting hair. It makes my career more fulfilling knowing that instead of just making someone look good, I’m actually going to make someone’s day just a little bit better.”

This year on February 18th, 2019, 15 barbers came together at the Eikonic Academy and completed over 60 haircuts in just five hours.

Raising the most amount of money to date, Cuts for Charity raised $2100, and graciously donated 100% of the proceeds to CMHA Toronto. We want to thank Jonathan, his team, the barbers, the Eikonic Academy and all the individuals who received haircuts for raising mental health awareness in our community!

As this event continues to grow, we can’t wait to see what Cuts for Charity accomplishes next year! Until then, you can visit Jonathan at The Infamous Scars & Strops Barbershop in Mississauga for a haircut and a close confidant!
